Heather Beaty. Flutist. Teacher.
At five years of age, Heather began her music education at the Vancouver Academy of Music where she quickly developed a blooming love for the performing musical arts. Heather made her solo debut with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at the age of 17, performing Mozart’s Flute and Harp Concerto with harpist Joy Yeh in Vancouver's historic Orpheum Theatre.
Heather has established herself as one of the leading freelance flutists in Vancouver, BC. She supports vibrant teaching studios at the Vancouver Academy of Music and Saint George’s School, and performs as an extra flutist with the city’s premier orchestral ensemble, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to the VSO, Heather performs as a Health Arts Society Artist and regularly presents chamber music concerts in hospitals and care centres with her flute and harp ensemble Luminara Duo and flute and guitar ensemble Duo Trovador.
During Heather’s three years on faculty with the Vancouver Academy of Music she has been named Suzuki Flute Acting Department Head and Director of VAMSO’s Junior Proteus Wind Ensemble. These professional milestones are testaments to the devotion Heather has for her students and the importance she values for music education in the community.
Besides music education and performance, Heather is passionate about supporting local arts organizations and presenting music in alternate venues. In 2012 Heather founded UBC’s Classical Music Collective Music on the Mind as a self-directed Master of Music study. This program provides the opportunity for UBC Music students to perform concerts in unique venues around campus. Heather’s future goals include presenting her own concert series in Vancouver.
In the summer months, Heather enjoys traveling abroad to pursue performance opportunities outside of British Columbia. Some recent highlights include Heather’s tour across Canada with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada (’13) and performances of Mozart’s operatic masterpiece Die Zauberflöte with the North Czech Philharmonic (’10) in Prague’s Estates Theatre, the same theatre where Mozart premiered his opera Don Giovanni in 1787. This summer 2014, Heather is looking forward to traveling to Belize where she will volunteer with the non-profit society MusAid as a teaching ambassador for the National Youth Orchestra of Central America.
Heather furthered her music education with the pursuit of both Bachelor ('10) and Master of Music ('12) degrees from the University of British Columbia. During her college years, Heather studied with some of North America's finest flutists; Vancouver Opera Orchestra Principal Flutist Brenda Fedoruk, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Principal Flutist Christie Reside and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Principal Flutist Lorna McGhee.
